Rapid Tooling, Mold Tool

Rapid tooling, also known as bridge tooling or prototype tooling. This is one of the steps in product development. It involves hand-loaded inserts, stocked mold bases, and mold material. The molding material could be either aluminum or soft steel.

Rapid tooling can be divided into two main approaches: Direct and Indirect.

With direct rapid tooling, we can produce and deliver our products faster. It also has simpler and more flexible processes for making parts.

Indirect rapid tooling requires only one master mode and is very durable. It can make tools with complex designs and geometries.

Advantages of Rapid Tooling

5

Speed

Rapid tooling significantly reduces the time required to produce the mold, enabling faster prototyping and production.

5

Cost-effectiveness

Rapid tooling tends to be more cost-effective compared to traditional tooling methods, especially for low to moderate volumes.

5

Complex Geometry

Well-suited for producing molds with complex geometries that can be challenging to produce using conventional methods.

5

Iterative Prototyping

Allows for rapid iteration and modification of the design during the prototyping phase.

5

Customization

Enables the creation of custom molds for specific applications and designs.

Limitations of Rapid Tooling

Shorter mold life cycle: Rapid tools are often made of aluminum or softer steel, which do not last as long as steel molds due to the stress placed on them by the high-pressure injection process.

Not suitable for early prototyping: If you are at the beginning of prototyping and anticipate the need for multiple modifications or significant changes, rapid tooling may not be the best option, as altering the mold can be costly and time-consuming.

Error prone: Rapid tooling parts may have defects or errors due to improper molding conditions or material properties, which may affect the functionality and quality of the product.

Applications of Rapid Tooling

Mold making – Both metal and non-metal molds can be made by rapid mold making.

Manufacturing of cast steel and core – SLS application is the latest technology in sand cast steel and core.

Electrodes for the EDM, the making of marker seals, the production of cast mixed patterns, and the creation of splinter tools

Rapid tooling is a great help to the manufacturing industry as it is a cost-effective, fast and efficient way to produce parts. It is suitable for low volume production.
